Belief in Bliss

We can’t be sure that the world exists in the way we think it does. Because we can’t be sure about anything, we’re somewhat forced to pick a set of beliefs that help us make sense of life.

And it doesn’t matter if our beliefs are provably true, they are just tools, mental constructs, used to explain different facets of life. Typically, they help us feel better about something that is unsettling, they tend to provide an explanation of why something happened.

Is faith in something unprovable delusional? We can’t be sure about anything, so in that sense, “absolute truths” tend to be more delusional. We may believe others have proven something, but again, that’s just faith in those people, they might be wrong or we might be misinterpreting them.

No matter our philosophy about life, it’s all faith in something unprovable. But it does seem logical to select beliefs that bring us the most joy. It makes sense to construct a view of the world that explains things in a way we personally enjoy.
