Story Time

You’re given some bad news, you stand speechless staring straight ahead, your heart rate quickens, an uneasy feeling comes over you. Wait, what? It’s a joke? What kind of joke was that? Your anxiety melts away, your heart rate slows, you feel relieved but slightly agitated from being fooled.

Your body and its emotions were controlled by your imagination as it was influenced by words that formed a fictional story. And if we can recover from trickery so quickly, it shows the malleability of our emotions.

So affected by words, our lives are told as thickly woven narratives, not as simple cause and effect. But when listening to these tales, the storyteller’s tendency to embellish must be recognized. These stories do not represent facts, they exist to manipulate emotions. When this is realized, recovery from emotional turbulence comes quickly.
